The sponsor funding a coaching engagement asks the coach for a summary of what the client has discussed in recent sessions. What do the ICF Core Competencies require of the coach?

Sub-competency 1.05 defines the obligation precisely: confidentiality with client information is maintained per stakeholder agreements and pertinent laws. What may reach the sponsor is settled by what the parties agreed and what the law permits, not by the coach's read of the request.

Who pays does not determine who is entitled to session content. Treating the commercial relationship as consent bypasses the stakeholder agreements the standard points to.

Reducing detail feels like a safe compromise, but the standard governs client information as such, not its level of detail. A themed summary is still a disclosure, lawful only if the agreements permit it.

Consulting the client is respectful, yet an in-the-moment preference is not the reference point the sub-competency names. Improvising in place of the standing agreement leaves confidentiality unstable.
Study note. When a third party asks for information, the first question is never "how much?" but "what did the agreements and the applicable law establish?"
